The winters are mild in Cape Canaveral, Florida, but you’ll still need to heat your home on some days. Fortunately, you can save money on your utility bills in winter by making simple changes like using sunlight, wearing warm clothes, and maintaining your HVAC system.

Using Sunlight

Open your curtains and window shades to let the sun help heat your home during the day. You can also enjoy natural light and a good view. Just remember to close your curtains at night for extra insulation.

You can also add solar panels to harness the sun’s energy. With enough of them, you can provide environmentally friendly power for your entire home. Even in winter, properly placed solar panels can produce lots of energy. They’re a substantial investment, but they will eventually pay for themselves and increase the value of your home. Solar panels also come in a variety of colors and sizes so you can always find a type that matches with your landscaping or your roof. Some panels function as shingles as well.

Wearing Warm Clothes

When the weather gets chilly, wear a cozy bathrobe, a nice sweater, or a coat instead of turning up your heat. You can also wear more layers of clothing or a pair of slippers, add a comforter to your bed, or use a blanket or quilt when you relax in your living room.

Maintaining Your HVAC System

You should have your HVAC system checked by a professional twice per year. A problem with your heat pump or furnace could reduce its efficiency, forcing you to use more energy to keep your home comfortable. You should also change your system’s air filter at least every three months. A clogged air filter wastes power as well.
