What is the SEER Rating?
The SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio) measures the efficiency of your air conditioner or air-source heat pump. The SEER is the cooling output over a particular season divided by the total energy used in that same period. The higher the SEER, the greater the efficiency level of that cooling system. We refer to SEER as MPG (miles per gallon) since it’s easier to understand that way.
Why do I need regular (or preventive) HVAC maintenance?
Your heating and cooling systems work incredibly hard to perform their functions. The constant stopping, starting and general operation can wear down any machine. Proper care and maintenance help to keep these systems in optimum condition and ward off malfunction. The typical A/C unit in the Melbourne/Palm Bay area runs approximately 2800 hours a year. The typical car is used about 575 hours a year. Could you imagine only servicing your car about every 5 years? HVAC systems of today are far more complex than those of 20 or even 10 years ago. While these new systems are far more efficient, they require thorough annual maintenance to ensure your efficiency stays in check.
Which equipment and brands requires regular (or preventative) maintenance?
All heating and cooling equipment requires annual professional tuneup. Heat pump and air conditioning unit inspections should also include an examination of the fan, compressor, indoor coils, outdoor coils, and refrigerant lines. All manufacturers require maintenance be performed to ensure your warranty stays in effect. By choosing to neglect your unit, you may in fact void your warranty.

What are the advantages of a programmable thermostat?
Programmable thermostats are more accurate and efficient than thermostats that contain mercury. With a programmable thermostat, you can program settings in advance so that you can control the temperature at different times of the day. You will never have to worry about remembering to adjust the settings manually.
Why don’t other contractors talk as much about maintenance and/or warranty coverage?
We believe in giving you the whole truth up front, even if this means we have to spend extra time to explain everything. It is our belief that it is our internal promise to you. We aren’t in the business to see you anything. We are in the business to educate and offer solutions. Why so many others don’t employ this approach leaves us scratching our head as well.
What type of filter should I use? And how often should I replace it?
Standard filters work to keep your system and its ductwork clean, but they can only do so much to improve indoor air quality. A media air cleaner does a much better job of trapping small particles. It rests between the main return duct and the blower cabinet and will improve dust and particle removal up to seven times more effectively than a standard filter. Upgrading to a pleated media filter will remove everything from dust to airborne viruses from the filtered air. Always choose a filter that matches your blower’s capacity. For optimal efficiency and filtration, we recommend that you replace your disposable filters at least once a month. If you have washable filters, you should clean them once a month during periods of heavy use. Our design consultant can demonstrate what filter best fits your home and your lifestyle.
Why can’t I find the correct size furnace filter at my local home improvement store for my Trane and Mitsubishi Electric Equipment?
Filters for your Trane unit are made from different and higher-quality materials than those of the disposable filters found in retail stores. For that reason, replacement Trane filters can only be purchased through a Trane dealer. However, keep in mind that some Trane filters are reusable, and can be washed by hand in cold water.

Which HVAC equipment will best fit my home?
Many factors affect the sizing and specifications of your system, including square footage, insulation, window surface and configuration, geographic location of your home, and duct sizing and arrangement. Ellington Air Conditioning & Heat can perform an in-home load analysis to determine which equipment combinations will perfectly suit your home and your family’s needs. Depending on the construction of your home, one (1) ton of air conditioning can cool anywhere from 300 to 800 square feet. You can ensure that the system you purchase is the right size and not smaller or larger than you require, by having your heating and cooling needs evaluated by a licensed professional.
What does my warranty cover?
Under the standard factory warranty, Trane covers parts that fail during the warranty period due to a defect in the part. The warranty does not cover labor. A warranty certificate was included with your homeowner information packet and is specific to the model numbers, serial numbers and installation dates of your products. Most Trane equipment that we install is registered with Trane Corporation to ensure your 10-year parts warranty. If you cannot find your warranty certificate, Ellington Air Conditioning & Heat will also be able to provide you with that information. As an Ellington Air Conditioning & Heat No Worries customer, you’ll have up to 12 years Bumper to Bumper coverage on your Trane equipment.
What about just being a few miles from saltwater, does this affect my warranty?
Yes. All air conditioning and heat pump brands exclude rust & corrosion from their warranty. HOWEVER, as an Ellington Air Conditioning & Heat No Worries plan member, we cover salt air corrosion on all functional parts. We are the only company in Brevard County with such coverage. This is just one part of the Ellington Difference!
